Updates: more than 70% completion for the construction of houses on Site 3

By | Blog, Slider, Uncategorized | No Comments

The houses being built on FP-UA’s Site 3 in Bogo City, barangay Cayang, north of Cebu Island, are getting closed to completion.

According to our NGO partner, Habitat for Humanity Philippines, as of end of November 2016, 2 units were already completed since the month of July 2016 and 44 units were all ongoing construction at various levels. The construction project is now at 73% accomplishment.

The construction of the units should be completed by the first quarter of 2017.

FP-UA is now welcoming donations for the site development. In order for the beneficiary families to be able to move in, the Foundation needs funds to provide them with essential and basic needs such as electricity, water, and a set of simple furniture (bed, tables and chairs).

To raise the necessary funds, the Foundation is offering companies or organizations to be part of our “Sponsor a Family” program. With a donation of Php 150 000, the companies or organizations will be able to allow one family to move to a disaster and earthquake resistant home. Once completed, the village will also serve as a refuge for the surrounding communities.

31 beneficiary families still need your help. The companies sponsoring our project will have their names and logos included in all our marketing collaterals and communication to the Filipino-French community about the project. The companies would also receive a photo of the sponsored family in front of their new house at the inauguration.

We would like to thank all our donors; companies, organizations, individual donors; who are contributing to improve lives of typhoon Haiyan victims by taking part of our project.

If you are interested to contribute to the “Sponsor a Family Program” and help victims of typhoon Haiyan to rebuild their lives in safe and secure houses, you may contact elodie.turpin@ccifrance-philippines.org.

Meet our Beneficiaries

By | Blog, Slider, Uncategorized | No Comments

Last November 14, the French photographer Arthur Perset visited the villages of FP-UA in Cebu. He met some of the future beneficiaries of the site currently being built in Bogo City and listened to their stories. He also talked to the current beneficiaries of our very first village, the “French Village” in barangay Agujo in Daanbantayan where 76 families now live. Here are their stories.

The funds raised during SB 2016 will enable two families to move into disaster-resilient houses

By | Blog, Slider | No Comments

During Soirée Beaujolais 2016, which took place last Tuesday November 29 at the Marriott Grand Ballroom, the FP-UA Foundation organised a silent auction which proceeds will be used to help complete the construction of it’s third disaster-resilient village in Bogo City, in the north of Cebu Island. The village, once completed, will welcome 46 families who are former victims of typhoon Haiyan.

Top celebrity Solenn Heussaff as well as up and coming local artists, Piaget Martelino, Alfonso Recto and Chris Verayo, each donated one of their artworks for the occasion.

The funds raised by the end of the night are enough to enable two families to move into their disaster-resilient houses; complete with electricity as well as running water.

At the moment, the construction of the houses, which is financed by Cités-Unies France, is nearing 70% completion. However, the village will still need to be connected to electricity as well as water, gutters and evacuation systems still need to be built in order for the selected beneficiary families to be able to move in. This is why the Foundation designed a “Sponsor a Family” program that allows a company or an individual to sponsor the installation of one of the 46 families into one of the disaster-resilient homes. As such, the inauguration of the village is thus scheduled for the middle of 2017.

The families selected are former victims of typhoon Haiyan that struck the Philippines three years ago and left scores dead or missing in the region. Because they live in “no-build zones” close to the sea, they were the first hit by the powerful winds of Haiyan. With little economics resources available, these families were, until now, unable to re-build stronger houses and unable to relocate in safer places further inland. The project of the FP-UA Foundation aims to provide them with a strong and sturdy home where they can feel safe in times of disasters.

The Foundation would like to thank the artists, Solenn Heussaff, Piaget Martelino, Alfonso Recto as well as Chris Verayo for putting their talent at the service of typhoon victims.

Solenn Heussaff and top local artists paint for typhoon victims

By | Blog, Slider | No Comments

Three years after the tragedy of typhoon Haiyan, a group of local artists, among which top celebrity Solenn Heussaff, will auction off paintings in order to complete a disaster-resilient village for typhoon victims.

Three years and other typhoons have passed since the powerful winds of typhoon Haiyan blew through the Visayas region in November 2013 ; displacing 14 million people and causing more than 6,000 fatalities. After all this time, the country is still recovering from the damages with thousands of those in its path struggling to rebuild their lives.

Until today, most of Haiyan victims still live in flimsy shelters that are unlikely to withstand the next typhoon. Indeed, because of the Philippines’ location on the Pacific Ring of Fire and the intensifying effect of climate change, Haiyan unfortunately won’t be the last super typhoon the country will experience. Just a few weeks ago, supertyphoon Haima/Lawin made the top of the headlines after sweeping through Northern Luzon, with strength and magnitude reminiscent of November 2013.

At the call of France-Philippines United Action (FP-UA), the Foundation of the French Chamber of Commerce and Industry, a group of local artists have put their creativity at the service of typhoon victims. Multi-dimensional artist Solenn Heussaff along with three of the country’s top emerging artists, Alfonso Recto, Piaget Martelino and Chris Verayo, each created original artwork that will be auctioned off to fund a project of the FP-UA Foundation : a disaster-resilient village benefiting victims of typhoon Haiyan.

The auction will take place during the  biggest French event of the year, Soirée Beaujolais, at the Marriott Grand Ballroom on November 29, 2016. This will be the 26th edition of this annual event organised by the French Chamber of Commerce, which gathers 1,500 people from the French and Filipino business community.

Proceeds of this auction will go to the completion of a rehabilitation village in Bogo City, in the north of Cebu Island ; a region which was largely devastated by the passage of typhoon Haiyan in 2013. This village will include 46 houses and a multi-purpose center designed to withstand up to intensity 8 earthquakes and strong winds of 275-300 km/h. It will welcome more than 200 people and is set to be completed by the middle of next year. The FP-UA Foundation is partnering with Habitat for Humanity Philippines on this project and has already received funding from various companies ; namely Cités Unies France, SYD Conseil, Pernod Ricard, Worldwide Food Distribution, Republic Cement, Megacem, The Wong Chu King Foundation, Delfingen, Asia Inspection, Annexus International and Archetype.

As the Foundation of the French Chamber of Commerce, the aim of the France-Philippines United Action is to encourage the French business community to give back to their welcoming host, the Philippines, through projects such as these.

The foundation was launched in 2013 as a response to the widespread damage inflicted by Typhoon Haiyan, known as the strongest and most violent typhoon to hit the country in a decade. FP-UA was swiftly created under the French Chamber of Commerce to coordinate the relief and rehabilitation initiatives of the French business community. Since then, two villages of more than 200 disaster-resilient houses have been built in Daanbantayan, also in the north of Cebu Island, and now host families who had lost their homes to the powerful typhoon.

Artist Solenn Heussaff is grateful for this opportunity to help her fellow Filipinos through her work : « I am very happy to be partnering with the FP-UA Foundation on this auction. This project shows the solidarity of the French community with Filipinos that are in need and I am very grateful that I am able to contribute to my country through my artwork. »

This will be the 26th edition of the Soiree Beaujolais which shows how deep the French community’s roots go in the country. This event will not only be a celebration of French food and wine but, via this silent auction, a testament to a relationship which has always been supportive in times of hardships.

The artwork, created by French and Filipino artists for this project is indeed a reminder that, together, we can build back better.

L’Institut asiatique du management (AIM) publie une étude sur les activités françaises de RSE aux Philippines

By | Blog, Slider | No Comments

The Asian Institute of Management publishes a study on French CSR in the PH

By | Blog, Slider | No Comments

The Asian Institute of Management partnered with the Foundation of the French Chamber of Commerce in the Philippines, France-Philippines United Action, to conduct a study on French Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities in the country. The aim of this study was to highlight the different French CSR initiatives in the Philippines and an attempt at defining a “French way” of approaching CSR.

Indeed, while American companies have practiced Corporate Social Responsibility extensively over many years, it largely remains a new concept in the French business community. However, in a country prone to natural disasters and facing development issues such as high levels of poverty and inclusive growth, French companies in the Philippines are also looking to contribute and develop their own CSR identity.

Nine companies answered the questionnaire sent and agreed to sit down for an interview about their CSR projects and practices. The results have been assembled in a report which is now available for distribution.

The conclusion of the study is that the participating companies demonstrated the richness and diversity of projects and processes of CSR initiatives. It found that French CSR practice had common elements: (1) they were directly related to the company core business, (2) they tended to focus on community interaction between the organization—employees and families – and the company identified communities, (3) they seemed to respond to country development needs—such as disaster relief or energy insufficiency, and (4) they highlighted an overriding concern for sustainability— through various environmental projects.

The FP-UA Foundation would like to thank the nine companies that took time to participate in this study and discuss their CSR contributions; namely Anxa, AXA, Delfingen, the Fruit Garden, Jewelmer, Michelin, Pernod Ricard, Schneider Electric and STMicroelectronics.

We would like to also thank Professor Roman of AIM for leading this study that gives the business community the opportunity to showcase the CSR involvement of the French community in the Philippines.

If you would like a copy of this study, please send an email to clementine.turgeon@ccifrance-philippines.org .

The construction of the houses on Site 3 is nearly 50% complete

By | Blog, Slider, Uncategorized | No Comments

The constructions on FP-UA’s Site 3 in Bogo City, north of Cebu Island, continue to make quick progress.

According to our NGO partner, Habitat for Humanity Philippines, as of the first week of August, the 46 units were all ongoing construction on different levels of accomplishments. Based on previous site evaluation (August 10), the construction project has now a general average of 49-50% accomplishment.

Construction activities were: wall coring, floor slab concreting, installation of forms & scaffolding’s, installation of electrical roughing-ins and excavation of septic vaults (tank).

IMG_20160705_144525 IMG_20160705_145034 IMG_20160705_145105 IMG_20160705_144348

The main donor for this site is Cités-Unies France which is funding the construction of the 46 units. The construction of the units should be completed by the beginning of next year.

This village, once completed, will welcome 46 families former victims of typhoon Haiyan and still living in extremely precarious conditions in zones at risks (for example by the sea shore). Even though the typhoon swept through the Philippines nearly three years ago, its effects are still felt today with hundreds of families who lost their roofs still living in flimsy shelters that will unlikely stand the next impact.

Before handing the keys to the beneficiary families, FP-UA needs to find contributors to fund the site development (installation of water, electricity etc) in order to complete the project and for the beneficiary families to finally be able to move in their newly built houses.

The foundation has thus set up a “Sponsor a Family” program: with a donation of Php 150,000, a company or organisation can enable one of these families to move into one of these disaster and earthquake resistant homes. As of today, 12 families have been sponsored:

– SYD Conseil is sponsoring 1 family,

– a personal donation (wishing to stay anonymous) sponsoring 1 family,

– Pernod Ricard is sponsoring 5 families,

– Worldwide Food Distribution Limited is sponsoring 1 family,

– Maxime Lemaitre, Managing Director of Worldwide Food Distribution Limited, is sponsoring 1 family,

– DataOne Asia (Philippines) is sponsoring 1 family,

– Republic Cement is sponsoring 1 family,

– Megacem is sponsoring 1 family.

– the Wong Chu King Foundation will sponsor 1 family.

The FP-UA Foundation is thus looking for contributors to sponsor 34 additional beneficiary families. The companies sponsoring our project will have their names and logos included in all our marketing collaterals and communication to the Filipino-French community about the project. The company would also receive a photo of the sponsored family in front of their new house at the inauguration.

Once completed, the village will also serve as a refuge for the surrounding communities. In fact, our first two villages in Daanbantayan served as evacuation centres during the last storms in the region.

If you are interested to contribute to the “Sponsor a Family Program” and help victims of typhoon Haiyan to rebuild their lives in safe and secure houses, you can send an email to clementine.turgeon@ccifrance-philippines.org.
